Description: Ravel might seem like the last word in Gallic chic, but he was born in the Basque country, and Spanish blood pulses beneath the surface of even his most elegant music. So when he set out to unleash his inner Spaniard, the results were explosive. Andris Nelsons conducts all Ravel’s Spanish-inspired orchestral music in a concert filled with flamboyant colours and smouldering emotion. There’s a very different kind of French fantasy before the interval. Ravel’s teacher Fauré kept his passions – but not his poetry – firmly under control; Marc-André Dalbavie’s Sonnets, meanwhile, is a dazzling showcase for the extraordinary voice of countertenor Yuri Minenko. All this and Boléro too!
