Walk of Stars
The city’s cultural phenomenon, The Birmingham Royal Ballet and its Director, David Bintley will be honoured on the Broad Street Walk of Stars today, followed by the company performing excepts from their forthcoming season.
The Birmingham Royal Ballet was formed in 1990 following Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet moving to the city. It has since gone from strength to strength and has a devout following, not only in Birmingham, but around the world. David Bintley has been the company’s artistic director 1995. Bintley is noted for his range and versatility as a choreographer, he actively encourages choreographic talent from within the company.
A great champion of Birmingham and a sceptic of London-centricity, Bintley is also a season-ticket holder at Aston Villa. He was made a CBE in the Queen’s 2001 Birthday Honours list.
Speaking earlier about the award David said “I am thrilled to receive the Broad Street Stars on behalf of the full company, Royal Ballet Sinfonia, technical and administrative staff. Birmingham Royal Ballet has a wonderful relationship with the City and we are very proud to call Birmingham and Birmingham Hippodrome our home. The Broad Street Stars are presented to the Company in a very special year as we continue to celebrate 20 years in the City, win the South Bank Show Dance Award for E=mc² and our new production of Cinderella, a gift to the City of Birmingham to say thank you for the last two decades, has its world premiere at Birmingham Hippodrome in November.”
