Birmingham Savoyards was formed in 1963 principally to perform the works of Gilbert & Sullivan, and today we are one of the few surviving and thriving G&S societies in the Midlands area keeping the important traditions of G&S alive. We perform a G&S production each March at the atmospheric Old Rep, one of Birmingham’s oldest theatres where many a famous face has trodden the boards in years gone by! As well as the well known G&S operettas, we are not afraid to tackle the lesser known rarely performed pieces. In 2010 we staged the rarely performed “The Grand Duke”, and in Autumn 2011 we shall be putting on a semi-staged concert version of Sullivan’s “The Zoo”, again rarely performed. In addition to our annual G&S production, we also stage concerts throughout the year, where we sing a wide range of other music spanning the 20th century through to the present day. As already referred to earlier, this Autumn we will also be performing “The Zoo” and “Trial by Jury” as a combined semi-staged concert. Through the performance of our wider range of music we support a number of different charities, including our main charity, the National Federation of the Blind, as well as assisting local Churches and organisations by performing concerts for them in aid of their own fund raising activities.
